2-2-3, 2-2-5-5, and 5-2-2-5 Parenting Schedules in California

California custody schedules are typically described by the number of days each parent has in a rotating cycle. The most widely used 50/50 schedules — the 2-2-3, 2-2-5-5, and 5-2-2-5 — each achieve equal time through different rotation structures. Understanding how each works helps parents choose the structure that best fits their specific logistics and their children's needs.

2-2-3 Custody Schedule

The 2/2/3 custody schedule rotates on a weekly basis: Parent A has the child for two days, Parent B has the child for two days, then Parent A has the child for three days — then the pattern reverses the following week. This means weekends are never "owned" by one parent permanently; they alternate as part of the three-day block. A 2 2 3 custody schedule alternating weekends variation alternates which parent gets the weekend within the three-day block each cycle.

The 2-2-3 is popular for younger children and parents who live close together because transitions are frequent — every two to three days — which keeps both parents regularly connected to the child's daily life. The 2-2-5 custody schedule template variation gives two days to each parent and then five to one parent before cycling, creating longer blocks that reduce transitions.

2-2-5-5 Parenting Schedule

The 2 2 5 5 parenting schedule gives each parent two consecutive days, then each parent five consecutive days, rotating over a 14-day cycle. The 2 2 5 5 custody schedule template is commonly: Parent A gets Monday/Tuesday, Parent B gets Wednesday/Thursday, then Parent A gets Friday through Tuesday, then Parent B gets Wednesday through Sunday — producing equal time. The 2-2-5 custody schedule template variation collapses the five-day blocks differently but achieves the same split.

5-2-2-5 Parenting Schedule

The 5 2 2 5 parenting schedule gives each parent a five-day block and a two-day block within a two-week period. A common 5 2 2 5 parenting schedule template runs: Parent A has Monday through Friday of week one; Parent B has Saturday and Sunday of week one; Parent A has Monday and Tuesday of week two; Parent B has Wednesday through Sunday of week two. The 5 2 2 5 parenting schedule calendar repeats on a 14-day cycle. A 5 2 2 5 parenting schedule calendar 2024 or 2026 printout can be generated from any shared calendar app.

5-5-2-2 and 5-2-5-2 Schedules

The 5 5 2 2 custody schedule and 5 5 2 2 custody variant give each parent five consecutive days followed by two shorter blocks within a two-week cycle. The 5 2 5 2 schedule alternates five-day and two-day blocks more evenly through the cycle. These structures work well for parents who prefer longer uninterrupted blocks and can commit to less frequent transitions.

4-3-3-4 Parenting Schedule

A 4 3 3 4 custody schedule and 4-3-3-4 parenting schedule alternate four-day and three-day blocks: Parent A has four days, Parent B has three days, Parent A has three days, Parent B has four days — totaling seven days each over the 14-day cycle. The 4-3-3-4 custody schedule is similar to the 3-4-4-3 but sequences the four-day block first.
